HERtitude is turning five this year, which feels almost sentimental. Five years of Zikoko intentionally building a women only space where the point is not to impress anyone. The point is to exist loudly or softly. To dance badly. To dress up. To overdo your makeup. To sit down with a plate of food and not feel like you have to rush.
It is a party, yes. There will be a fashion show. There will be good food. There will be DJs who will play songs that remind you of versions of yourself you forgot about. There will be speed friendship sessions which, if you think about it, is such a beautiful concept. Women sitting across from each other and deciding to know each other on purpose.
But more than the programming, it is the intention that matters.
HERtitude is designed to be a safe space for women to party, connect, and relax. And I do not use the word ‘safe’ casually.
Safe means you can wear what you want without calculating how it will be received. Safe means you can dance without shrinking yourself. Safe means you can laugh loudly and not feel observed. Safe means your body is just your body and not a spectacle.
If you have ever left a function more exhausted than you arrived, you understand why this matters.
